Website Topics

What makes for a good website topic ultimately depends on your passion and knowledge for a given topic. Sure, a website about Mesothelioma may attract large ad spending by law firms but creating a successful website in such a competitive and saturated market is unlikely. Why not write about a subject that you are passionate and knowledgeable about? Many people do—and are pleasantly surprised when their labor of love becomes a cash cow.

I found myself in that situation a few years ago. My labor of love that was created as a public service was steadily picking up traffic and eventually overtook the big boys in my niche or subject area. I knew I could provide better and more relevant information and make it easier for visitors to find the information they were looking for. With that motivation, I continuously worked on my website and was constantly encouraged when visitors to my website would email me praising my website and telling me it was better than the big corporate websites in the same niche.

My point is that you are much more likely to succeed if you select a website topic that you are both knowledgeable and passionate about. Any idiot can create a website these days so you have to be willing to put in the hard work to succeed and rise above your competition. By offering visitors unique and insightful content you will naturally gain traffic from backlinks (incoming links to your website) and repeat visitors.

Given my above recommendation, you should hopefully now have an idea of a website topic in mind. Often times you may have to narrow your website topic down from an overly broad subject. For a quick example, you may simply adore everything there is to know about dogs but it would be advisable to narrow your website topic down further into something more manageable, such as specific dog breeds, puppy training, etc.

If you are having a hard time narrowing your website topic down from a broad subject area, browsing the Open Directory Project (ODP) may help. The ODP is the most comprehensive directory of the web with websites broken down into an astounding amount of different categories. Simply drill down through the many categories and you may find inspiration if your given subject is broken down into smaller subcategories in the ODP. You can also view your potential competition in a given niche and find ways to tailor your website topic to a niche that isn't heavily represented in the ODP which may increase your chance of success.

Another way to narrow down your website topic is by using the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Plug in your broad website topic and Google will show you relevant keywords which will help you limit the scope of your website. This tool is extremely beneficial as it can help you come up with a good website topic by providing the amount of advertiser competition and search volume. By looking at the results, you can select a website topic that advertisers are targeting for their ad spending. The search volume can be important as well but generally the higher the search volume, the more fierce the competition. Instead of competing for the most popular keywords, carving out a niche may be a better strategy.

By using the advice above, you should be able to select an excellent website topic. The next step is to register a domain name.
